Flying on a Shoestring
The original Shoestring homebuilt Formula 1 racing plane was designed by Rodney Kreimendahl. Early in its development, Rodney asked his wife to suggest names. She replied, "Shoestring" – because it was planned and built on a shoestring budget.
The name stuck. The small plane took its first flight in 1949 and went on to win many races through 1974. Considered one of the iconic midget racers from that era, the Shoestring is still popular today in Formula 1 racing.
With this .46-size model, Great Planes also offers a well-made, fast, fun airplane for shoestring budgets. It's economical in assembly time as well as total costs, performing well without expensive engines and servos. Ideal power choices include the 2-stroke 46AX glow engine or ElectriFly™ RimFire™ .46 outrunner brushless motor. With either option, the Shoestring provides a wide flight envelope that any intermediate to advanced pilot will enjoy!
The full-size Shoestring's simplicity made it a favorite with builders...its maneuverability and speed appealed to trophy-hunting pilots. Those same qualities make this ARF a standout, offering easy assembly, exciting aerobatics, and a distinctive look at the flight line.
Instructions and mounting parts are included for installing a 2-stroke or 4-stroke glow engine or a brushless electric power system. Use whichever you prefer – no modifications are necessary. Electric mount (GPMG1255) sold separately.
Remove the Shoestring's hatch and you'll find plenty of room inside the fuselage for easily installing your on-board equipment.
The foam core, balsa sheeted wing halves slide together onto a carbon-fiber joiner rod. While the model fits into most vehicles fully assembled, it can easily be taken apart for compact carrying and storage.
Like the full-size homebuilt, the Shoestring ARF is designed to be economical both in cost and assembly time. Even the aileron hinges have been installed for you at the factory!
The lines of the original Shoestring are captured in lightweight fiberglass parts, including the cowl, wheel pants and fuselage – whose corrugations suggest the fabric covering of the classic Golden Age racer.
